THE GUIDE TO LIVING IN RESTON, VIRGINIA

The History of Reston, Virginia

Established in 1964 by Robert E. Simon, who envisioned a planned community that would integrate residential, commercial, and recreational spaces, Reston, Virginia is among the most dynamic communities in Northern Virginia.

A penultimate example of the Garden City movement, Reston, Virginia was developed as a response to the suburban sprawl that characterized mid-20th century America and aimed to create a community that not only provided housing but also encouraged social interaction, active lifestyles, and land conservation through a thoughtfully planned network of modern and contemporary home clusters, walking trails, pools, and sporting facilities.

The first residents moved to Reston, Virginia during the late 1960s, and quickly gained recognition for its innovation in urban planning. The design incorporated a network of parks, lakes, golf courses, and walking trails, emphasizing green spaces and communal areas. In 1970, the Reston Town Center was established as a central hub for shopping and services, further contributing to the community's growth.

As the years progressed, Reston, Virginia experienced significant development, attracting significant interest from major corporations such as Microsoft and Google. The introduction of the Washington Metro's Silver Line in 2014 enhanced connectivity and accessibility to the greater Washington Metropolitan Area, driving further expansion.

Today, Reston, Virginia is known for its diverse population, vibrant arts scene, and commitment to sustainability. The community has continued to evolve while maintaining its founding principles of community-oriented living and environmental stewardship.
