THE GUIDE TO LIVING IN GIBSON ISLAND, MARYLAND

The History of Gibson Island, Maryland

Since its founding in 1921, Gibson Island, Maryland has stood apart as one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most exclusive enclaves.

Conceived by Baltimore judge and businessman Stuart Symington as a private summer retreat, the original conceit of the island was envisioned as a social club where members could escape the hustle and bustle of city life to enjoy sailing, golf, and tennis amid natural beauty and coastal breezes.

Under the guidance of the Olmsted Brothers, the spirit of Gibson Island, Maryland was to emphasize meandering paths, preservation of native landscapes, and residential lots carefully positioned to maximize privacy. While the original plan called for more than 400 homes and two eighteen-hole golf courses, Gibson Island, Maryland evolved into a tightly held community of roughly 190 residences, each designed with architectural distinction.

Among the most notable waterfront communities in the Mid-Atlantic — just 20 miles North of Annapolis, Maryland on Maryland’s Western Shore — Gibson Island, Maryland features an abundance of unique amenities, including a 24-hour secured gatehouse and its own private police force, a full-service yacht yard, and access to the Gibson Island Club, a private country club offering yachting, fine dining, an award-winning Charles Blair Macdonald designed 9-hole golf course.

Among the most desirable waterfront communities in the Mid-Atlantic, Gibson Island, Maryland offers an idyllic blend of privacy and provenance in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay.
