The History of The Plains, Virginia

Located in the heart of Virginia Hunt Country, the charming enclave of The Plains, Virginia represents the ideals of small town living. Formally incorporated in 1910, The Plains, Virginia — like many areas throughout the Mid-Atlantic — was long home to a significant Sioux and Iroquois population. During the early 1700s, Governor Spotswood of the Virginia Colony agreed to a treaty to halt westward expansion beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains. However, by the mid-1700s, additional land grants were awarded to the second generation of settlers in the region, including a 1,000 acres parcel called White Plains Farm.

In the 1830s a post office would be established in The Plains, Virginia as would the Manassas Gap Railroad in 1852 and Grace Episcopal Church in 1855. During the American Civil War, The Plains, Virginia served as a strategic outpost for Union and Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. Following the devestation and subsequent reconstruction, The Plains, Virginia was finally incorporated in 1910, but faced hardships along the way.

In the 1970s, under the guidance of the Piedmont Environmental Council and a few notable private citizens — including Arthur W. Arundel — the first master plan for The Plains, Virginia was completed With trees were planted, sidewalks restored, old buildings renovated, and additions made to others.
