Set within a working horse farm in the heart of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, this spectacular contemporary retreat was conceived as an extension of the landscape.

Completed in 2025 under the guidance of award-winning residential architecture firm RAAD Studio and acclaimed custom home builder Gruver Cooley, the home was created to feel inseperable from its setting, cleverly folding into the mountainside to allow the architecture to become part of the terrain itself.

A masterclass in indoor-outdoor living, the home’s green roof serves as a natural architectural extension of the hillside while expansive walls of glass frame uninterrupted views of the surrounding meadows. Twenty-foot-tall operable windows by OTIIMA reveal the primary living spaces to the landscape, dissolving the threshold between inside and out and allowing the rhythms of the seasons to shape daily life.

Inside, the home's most memorable spaces reveal themselves gradually. A soaring library is concealed within the hillside, rising thirty feet beneath a single monumental skylight that fills the room with changing natural light throughout the day. Beneath the private quarters, a vaulted underground lap pool and spa serve as a quiet retreat, accessed discreetly from the owner's suite.

Material selections reinforce the home's connection to place. Stone recovered during excavation was repurposed as the living room hearth, while natural rock continues inside as sculptural elements, including a custom stone feature wall and carved soaking tub. Throughout the home, finely detailed millwork and bespoke furnishings bring warmth and restraint to a decidedly contemporary design, while a geothermal system, radiant floor heating, and Crestron smart-home controls work quietly in the background to support comfort without competing with the experience of the architecture.
