Down a winding country road, meandering through rural farmland and rolling pastures, lies an exceptional two-acre site that is home to one of the finest examples of contemporary architecture in Virginia.

Completed in 2024 under the guidance of award-inning residential architect Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, this exquisite contemporary farm house is oven into verdant Virginia landscape, where hills dotted with agrarian structures and miles of cattle fencing provide stunning views of nearby Old Rag Mountain.

Designed in response to the vernacular farmhouses and many red barns that inhabit the surrounding countryside, this modest 1,700 square foot csutom home features simple forms designed as an assemblage of three volumes. With elemental gable roofs that are simply detailed, minimal trim, and no overhangs, this contemppoary farmhouse was constructed economically, with inexpensive, vernacular materials such as painted clapboard siding, asphalt roof shingles, and corrugated metal siding.

Inside, interior finishes, trim, and materials are clean and edited. A linear entry space connects the living pavilion and bedroom pavilion, while a narrow axis continues to connect the third volume — a carport that doubles as a sheltered outdoor terrace. A screened porch is situated between the bedroom pavailion and the livign pavillion, which serves as a singular, open space with fourteen-foot ceilings and minimal spatial expression. Strategically placed windows, including a full-height window at the end of the living pavilion, frame the nearby mountain views.  

Ultimately, this modest custom home draws inspiration from the regional landscape, providing a connection to its place among the Virginia countryside.
