When a growing family set their sights on a new homesite, this early 1900s barn situated on more than 25 acres in the heart of Virginia Hunt Country presented a unique opportunity.

Completed in partnership with acclaimed residential architecture firm Third Street Architecture and custom home builder Monumental Contractors, the goal was to honor the barn’s original form while introducing a sense of warmth and livability.

What began as a structure rooted in utility was carefully reimagined as an inviting, highly functional home layered with character, with volume and scale driving many of the design decisions.

Inside, soaring ceilings and exposed structural elements allow the barn’s rustic architectural details to remain the focal point, while softer materials and thoughtful detailing bring balance and approachability.

Outside, the updated facade incorporates James Hardie siding and Shou Sugi Ban charred cedar from Delta Millworks, blending modern practicality with the rustic charm of the original agrarian structure.

Completed in 2025, what was once purely utilitarian now supports a more personal rhythm of life, equally suited for quiet mornings and hosting family and friends.
