Property Description

Located in the desirable Kent neighborhood of Washington, D.C., this modest Craftsman bungalow displays the possibilities of a whole home renovation.

Originally built in 1929, the home was laboring beneath several insensitive and over-scaled expansions that had eradicated much of its charm.

Then, in 2021, under the direction of award-winning architecture firm EL Studio and acclaimed custom home builders Added Dimensions, the new owners — a growing family — chose to invest in interior and exterior enhancements designed for an elevated and decideley contemporary lifestyle.

Inside, small, confined rooms that leveraged extraneous and historically incompatible architectural details created an isolating effect, encouraging the design team to exercise curation and refinement in the new approach.

To address the dark and too-deep rear screen porch, a large and open kitchen and dining space was added. Sliding glass doors and a tasteful new window package helped expand access to the garden, porch, and outdoor pool designed by Moody Graham Landscape Architecture.

On the exterior of the home, the front dormer and porch infill that overwhelmed the original structure was removed to present a more open and genial facade to the street and visiting neighbors.

Featuring Henrybuilt cabinetry, wide-plank white oak floors, glass, and steel, this impressive transformation serves as a penultimate example of a successful whole home renovation.
