Kingman Place
In Washington, D.C., a bold unification of two historic rowhouses blends classic and contemporary
KINGMAN PLACE
Property Description
In Washington, D.C.’s Logan Circle neighborhood, this unique union of two neighboring rowhouses takes the ideals of a whole home renovation to new heights.
When a young family began to outgrow its space, they chose to explore more creative avenues to stay in the city they loved by purchasing their neighboring 1870s rowhouse with the ambition to merge the two homes into a single, light-filled residence.
Entrusted to acclaimed residential architecture firm Fowlkes Studio and Sandy Spring Builders, the ambitious renovation honored the protected historic facades while reimagining the interiors with openness, calm, and architectural drama.
Inside, serene spaces unfold in a palette of soft neutrals and refined textures. A minimalist living room centers on a zellige-tiled fireplace framed in Venetian plaster. The dining room is anchored by a custom live-edge walnut table with pewter-finished bronze legs beneath and an ethereal black-metal chandelier hanging above.
A central feature of the re-imagined space — a monumental glass-and-steel staircase anchored to the preserved masonry party wall — connects all three levels and serves as a perfect blend of classic and contemporary.
Towards the rear, the home opens to an expanded kitchen defined by bleached walnut cabinetry, bronze hardware, and a 12-foot Caesarstone waterfall island. A dramatic 500-pound quartz-clad range hood, suspended from a custom steel armature, crowns the space.
A tranquil sanctuary in the heart of the Nation’s Capital, this home honors the urban environment by embracing bold creativity, a meticulous attention to detail, and a respect for architectural history.
